Privacy Policy for Mark My Word
Last Updated: Feb 8 2026
Welcome to Mark My Word. We are committed to protecting your personal information and your right to privacy. This Privacy Policy explains how we collect, use, and store your information when you use the Mark My Word browser extension and web application.
1. Our Philosophy: Offline-First
The Mark My Word browser extension is designed to be offline-first. This means that by default, the data you generate (highlights, pages) are stored locally on your device within your browser’s storage.
Unless you explicitly choose to enable the optional Synchronization feature, we do not have access to your data, and it never leaves your device.
2. Information We Collect
A. If You Use the Extension Locally (Default)
When you use Mark My Word without syncing:
Highlight Data: Your highlights are stored in your browser’s local IndexedDB.
Browsing History: We do not collect or store your browsing history. The extension only accesses the specific page you are currently highlighting to save the text, position, and some metadata.
No Server Transmission: No data is sent to our servers.
B. If You Use the Optional Synchronization
If you choose to create an account and enable synchronization to view highlights across devices or on our Web App, we collect and store the following data:
Account Information: Your email address and a secure hash of your password (for authentication).
Synced Data: The highlight data.
3. How We Use Your Information
We use the data collected strictly for the functionality of the service.
To Provide the Service: We store your highlights on our server only to allow you to access them on other devices and via the Mark My Word web app.
No Data Selling: We never sell, rent, or trade your personal data to third parties.
No Ad Profiling: We do not use your highlights or browsing context to build an advertising profile or for marketing purposes.
4. Data Storage and Security
Location: Your synced data is stored on secure servers located in Frankfurt, Germany.
Security: We use industry-standard TLS encryption when transmitting data between your browser and our servers.
Retention: We retain your synced data only as long as you maintain an account with us. If you delete your account, your data is removed from our servers.
5. Third-Party Services
Note-Taking Apps: Once you copy your highlights to third-party note-taking apps (e.g., Obsidian, Notion, Evernote), the data is governed by the privacy policy of that third-party application. We are not responsible for how those apps handle your data.
Hosting Providers: We use trusted third-party cloud providers to host our synchronization servers. They have physical access to the servers but strictly limited logical access to your data.
6. Your Rights
You have control over your data:
Access: You can view all your synced data in the extension and the web app, once available.
Export: Download a backup in the settings of the browser extension to see all the stored data for highlights and pages. Contact us if you need a full export of your data, including stored account information.
Deletion: To delete your account, please reach out to us. If you have sync disabled, your data remains on your local device until you uninstall the extension.
7. Changes to This Policy
We may update this privacy policy from time to time. The updated version will be indicated by an updated “Revised” date and will be effective as soon as it is accessible. If we make material changes to how we handle your data, we will notify you through the extension or via email.
